DESCRIPTION:THIS HIKE WAS MOVED TO MONDAY SEPT 7\, 2026 AS HIKE TO PINES NEEDED TO  BE CANCELLED \nDiscussion will take place on Monday about a possible different hike close to Atikokan on Tuesday. \nWe will hike the Paul Kane Trail starting at the North end of Dawson Campground (at the French Portage Parking Lot by the Log Cabin). We will continue to hike to the French Falls. We will be following the French Portage Trail. This hike into the past traces a portage first established by First Nations and later used by European explorers and fur traders. It was for a short time\, the main route for settlement in the Red River area of Manitoba and for further exploration west. This trail is long but has some steep climbs as it leads you to the cascades of the French River. Please bring plenty of fluids and a lunch and wear sturdy hiking boots. SUMMARY:Top of the Giant\, Sleeping Giant Provincial Park
DESCRIPTION:We will tackle this iconic hike in the low season. Getting to the Giant and back includes 14 km (7/7) of wider\, easy hiking trails. We will pass Tee Harbour (stopping on the way back to enjoy the rocky outcrop) and arrive at the Talus Lake Junction. Climbing the Giant includes a challenging switchback trail with 900 feet of elevation gain. But the hard work brings an impressive view of Lake Superior and Thunder Bay on clear days. We will eat lunch at the Chimney on the Giant. Wear sturdy footwear and bring plenty of food/water.  Additional Fees:  Park Pass Permit (day use) approx. $21. DESCRIPTION:This is a relaxed pace hike consisting of 2 loops. The shorter (2 km) trail follows the Current River.  The longer (4 km) trail involves a steep 100m climb.  There is some rough terrain\, possibly some muddy sections and a nice view from the top.
